Sanctuary of Truth (Prasat Sut Ja-Tum)

A celebration of religion and life.

When you first lay eyes on this building, you will be overwhelmed by the sheer intricacy and numbers of the carvings decorating its facade. Upon closer inspection, you will be able to appreciate the fine Thai craftsmanship behind the exquisite depictions of elephants, people and scenes, creatures and deities from mythology. The building is made entirely from wood, and is unprotected from the elements. When you find out the reason for this - to represent the fleeting nature of humanity, constantly having to be renewed and updated - you will begin to get a feel of the philosophical and spiritual ethos of the building.

The numerous traditional and contemporary Hindu and Buddhist sculptures from a range of cultures that fill its halls were put together by the successful Thai businessman Lek Viriyaphant, who hopes to promote the common goal of living life with the ultimate aim of reaching an ideal world, as he believes that this is what will achieve eternal peace for mankind. The building is a place to worship no single god, but the concept of religion in and of itself, while fostering an appreciation for all philosophy, faith and culture.

Upon entering the Sanctuary, there is a natural hush that can be felt immediately. This is the quiet that results when people gather to respect and embrace the wonderful diversity of cultures that share our planet. The first hall features symbols of the Universe and Earth and the Gods of the elements, while the second hall follows the story of the Sun, Moon and Stars, who control the days, tides and fates of all. The third hall is a tribute to parental love, considered the purest love of all. The final hall showcases the Buddha’s discovery of the Four Noble Truths, forging the path to Nirvana, the end of all suffering and sorrow. Visit this temple cum palace to discover the truth, and get in touch with your spiritual side.
