Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona

A place of serenity and silence believed to extend between heaven and earth.

Nestled in a recess of Mount Baldo, lies the beautiful and mystical Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona, otherwise known as the Shrine of the Corona, which is believed to be a place of silence and worship that extends between heaven and earth. Its history can be traced back to the medieval times; where around the 11th century, it was home to hermit monks. Legend has it that the Shrine of Our Lady of the Corona was transported by angels from the island of Rhodes, thus giving the Sanctuary its name.

Noted for its artwork, The Sanctuary houses many divine Iconologies, ranging from sculptures carved from white Carrara marble to the Scala Santa, a replica of the scale used to weigh Jesus before he was crucified. On the right wall of the chapel is a breathtaking display of ex voto (offerings), commissioned in thanks for the myriad of miracles granted to the faithful. Comprising of 167 tablets in numerous sizes, some which date back to 1547.

Due to its inaccessible location, the only way up to the Sanctuary is by foot, so be prepared to lace up those hiking boots! The trek starts from the valley below, in the small village of Brentino, where you have to follow a long, winding path, and an over 1500-step stairway that is carved from the mountains. The trek will take you about 2 hours ascending, and an hour and a half descending. If climbing sounds too tough, you can also access the Sanctuary via a paved road dug into the rocks from the village of Spiazzi, located on the top of the mountain.
