San Miniato al Monte

A wonder of faith and beauty, the San Miniato al Monte was constructed out of an intriguing legend.

Just five minutes uphill from the Piazzale Michelangelo lies one of the finest jewels of Romanesque architecture in Italy. The minute you lay eyes on the San Miniato al Monte, the beautiful white Carrara and green Prato marble delicately inlaid on the façade will surely leave you enchanted. Step inside to witness more grandeur with a marble pavement in the central aisle dating back to the 13th century. Gaze at the exquisite Cappella del Crocefisso by Michelozzo (1448) and the fascinating frescoes by Taddeo Gaddi.

Legend has it that Minias, whom the church was named after, was decapitated. Miraculously, he picked up his head and crossed the Arno River to a hill and this church was built upon his death to honor him as a saint in 1013. Look out for the inspiring mosaic of St. Minias presenting Christ with a crown in the apse above the choir.

Tips Before You Go
Mass is observed in the evening in this church, and if you arrive in time you will be able to hear the monks chanting and saying their prayers, which will really soothe your soul. There is also a crypt here which you can visit, although you should probably wear extra layers as it can get rather cold in there.
