Sami Acropolis

The walk to Sami Acropolis will be a treasured memory.

When you’re in Sami, one of the things that you cannot miss is the Sami Acropolis, which is only 2 kilometers away from the village. The ruins of this ancient structure lie in Lapthal Mountain, close to the port of Sami. Eons ago, it was a strong, fortified town that was part of an autonomous state. It even had its own coin that dated back to the Paleolithic age!

History has it that Sami lost its autonomy during the Roman siege in 188 B.C., after which it grew again due to trade and growth in population. Several details of this once mighty town can be found in the famous poems, Iliad and Odyssey. In the present day, we are lucky to witness a few parts of the citadel that was erected during the Hellenistic period. There is a hiking trail that begins in Sami, taking you to the top of the hill. The view from here is beyond spectacular and will totally be worth the walk up.
