Salzburger Weihnachtsmuseum

Christmas past, like never before.

You don't need to be Scrooge to experience Christmas past, and especially not through a ghostly visitor. For a brighter and more delightful experience, head down to the Salzburger Weihnachtsmuseum (Salzburg Christmas Museum) to find out what it was like during Christmas in southern Germany and Austria from the mid-10th century to mid-20th century.

Collected by Ursula Kloiber for four decades, the items on exhibition have significant cultural and historical value, and are truly a delightful reminder of the celebration and joy associated with Christmas. Not everything is pine and lights galore, though, for sinister things lurk at this museum. Good children in Austria get rewards from St Nicholas, while the bad kiddos get a visit from Krampus, a leering creature with a terrifying face and long horns. Open doors to discover the way houses were decorated over the decades, including a tree bearing decorations like field guns, pistols and a tiny Zeppelin, among many others. A delightful museum that is worth every minute you spend here.
