Saint Catherine’s Monastery

One of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world!

Saint Catherine’s Monastery, otherwise known by the Christian faith as the “Sacred Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai” is situated on the Sinai Peninsula, at the foot of Mount Sinai in Saint Catherine, Egypt. It comes under the administration of the Church of Sinai and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. The outstanding monastery traces its history all the way back to 565 - the year it was established. That makes it one of the oldest working Christian monasteries worldwide! Besides housing monks, it also houses the world’s oldest continually operating library, with precious collections like the Syriac Sinaiticus and the Codex Sinaiticus. While you might not be able to actually touch these precious old books, you can still admire the scenic views and spiritual atmosphere in the monastery. In fact, hotels and tourist amenities have been popping up around the monastery as well after attracting tourists who have come to visit. If you are into ancient history and art, this is certainly a place to visit.

Tips Before You Go
Do expect several security checks as you make your way there, but once you’re passed all that, the experience will certainly be unforgettable. Just remember to dress conservatively because at the end of the day, the monastery is still a place of worship.
