One of the largest fine art museums in all of Russia!

The Russian Museum, formerly known as the Russian Museum of His Imperial Majesty Alexander III, contains the largest collection of Russian fine art pieces in Saint Petersburg. It remains one of the largest museums in the whole country as well. The museum was officially opened in 1895 when Nicholas II rose to the throne in order to commemorate Alexander III, his father. The original works housed in the museum ranged from those from the Hermitage Museum, Alexander Palace and the Imperial Academy of Arts. Some of the more famed pieces which currently sit in the museum include ‘Dmitry Levitzky, Portrait of Glafira Alymova (1776), ‘Karl Brullov, The Last Day of Pompeii (1830-33)’ and ‘Kasimir Malevich, Black Square 1923)’.

Tips Before You Go
The museum is massive, so you can definitely expect to spend quite a fair bit of time here. Be sure to take the audio guides as well, because the displays are entirely in Russian, so you might not be able to make heads or tails of any of them.
