Royal Palace of Amsterdam

A peek into the lives of Dutch Royalty.

This is your only chance to explore a Royal Palace on Dutch soil, for it is the only one open to visitors. Having served as Amsterdam’s City Hall for the first century, the building was then used as the residence of Napoleon’s brother, Louis, who was appointed King of Netherlands. During his retreat, Louis left many of his grandiose furnishings behind, and the building was then used by the Dutch royal family, mostly for formal occasions and receptions.

This beautiful building has classic architectural style imbued, and features numerous paintings and sculptures that were significant at the time that it was still the City Hall. Atlas, who sits atop the roof, carries the firmament on his shoulders, is one of the few. As you enter the Citizens’ Hall, in the heart of the building, you will be blown away by the sheer opulence of it all: glowing golden chandeliers and finely polished marble. In fact, the maps on the floor are based on world maps and start charts. The aches show the four elements as you make your way to the galleries. Admire the finely detailed sculptures of Venus and Mars, and Icarus warns of being overly prideful at the entrance to the Bankruptcy Chamber. With so many antiques and hidden treasures to explore, your trip here will be delightful and leave you wanting for countless visits!
