Roman Villa of Skala

Surprisingly well-preserved for an ancient structure, the Roman Villa of Skala beckons to discover its secrets.

On the far south of the Kefalonian Island is the village of Skala, home to the famous Skala Beach. But that’s not the only thing the village is famous for. Close to the beach, you will find the remains of an ancient Roman mansion that will take you back to a time when it was likely the source of envy among the local villagers. Known as the Roman Villa of Skala, the mansion is said to have been built in the 2nd century A.D. by a wealthy Roman landowner and was believed to have been destroyed in a fire sometime in the 4th century A.D. To this day, the mosaics on the floor can be seen clearly: one section depicts Fthonos, the God of Envy, being attacked by four wild animals, while another portrays a sacrificial ritual. There are different interpretations to these scenes, yet no one knows for sure what exactly they all mean. Perhaps you could see them for yourself and decide?
