Literally meaning Corpse Field, Rohtang Pass got its macabre name due to the large number of people who lost their lives while trying to cross this difficult mountain range. Located 51 kilometres from Manali, the pass stands at a height of 3,978 metres. As you drive up towards the pass, you will be treated to mesmerising views of the surrounding mountains and beautiful landscape. Starting out early is recommended if you are travelling by car, as the narrow roads experience traffic jams frequently. Trekking up Rohtang Pass is also very popular; however, the trails can be very challenging. The most sought-after trail, the Manali-Lahaul pass, is an arduous 117 kilometres long! Many who have conquered this trail rave about the impressive views along the trail, said to be absolutely worth the physical and mental challenge.
