Rjukan Falls

So beautiful it inspires visitors and artists.

Loosely translated to mean “the smoking falls”, the Rjukanfossen, or Rjukan Falls, is a sight to behold. With a drop of 104m, the falls were given the name because the sheer force of the water colliding generates massive clouds of mist.

Interestingly, the discovery of this waterfall helped boost tourism in the town of Rjukan, because the professor who chanced upon it put forward the claim that it was the highest waterfall in the world (it is not). Nevertheless, this beautiful waterfall has charmed the likes of many people, even serving as the source of inspiration for artists. This natural beauty also has a functional purpose, helping to power the Vemork power station.
