Rietveld Schroder House

Built completely in the De Stijl style, nothing else screams quirky more than this house.

De Stijl style - the use of only horizontal and vertical lines, incorporating primary colours. This is the very style that architect Gerrit Rietvald utilised, designing one of the few architectural masterpieces in the world. It is no surprise this masterpiece is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, clearly seen by its creative use of space.

Restored as a museum, the house was designed for Mrs. Truus Schroder and her 3 children, after her husband died. She was compelled to stay in a smaller house with her children, commissioning Rietvald to help in putting her ideas to life, through his iconic designs. Rietvald’s architectural genius is showcased in the use of portable partitions, easily transforming rooms. From cosy and private bedrooms, to open play spaces for the children, the partitions aided in that transformation, allowing Mrs. Schroder and her children to have free reign over the layout. With many possible combinations for the layout of the rooms, the dynamic nature of Rietvald’s design was highly unique, one which served to be influential even up till today. The only house that Reitvald designed in this manner, it would definitely be a memorable visit for one and all.
