Red Beach

Admire the wonders of nature at Greece’s most famous beach.

The Red Beach in Santorini is truly a wonder to behold. Formed by sand of varying shades of red, the beach is bounded by the sapphire sea on one side and steep crimson cliffs on the other – an unforgettable sight. Bring along some snorkelling gear to fall deeper in love with the treasure trove of fascinating rock formations and bustling marine life hiding just beneath the pristine surface of the sea. For foodies, several family-owned Greek restaurants (commonly known as tavernas) are sprinkled around the area; and they offer meals ranging from fresh fish, to Greek salads, cooked by locals that know the best about Greek food.

In addition, umbrellas and benches have been set up on the beach, perfect for a day of sunbathing and appreciating its beautiful and vivid colours, which are the result of ancient volcanic activity. As night falls, the sunset cascades down, lending an ethereal glow to the already beautiful Red Beach, before resigning to bed - one of nature’s greatest marvels, it is sure to take your breath away. Red Beach may merely be a sight for the eyes; however, it also contains the rich culture of the locals, unaffected by the stresses of modernity. They continue to lead their lives peacefully and independently; proud of what Santorini has to offer.

Tips Before You Go
The number of beach-goers peak during the the summer months from June to August, which makes it best to go in September when the crowd has subsided yet the seawater temperature is still sufficiently warm for a memorable experience at the Red Beach. In addition, several tavernas do not have access to clean running water or bathrooms, so do be sure to come well-prepared!
