Ravana Falls

A waterfall named after a king who stole a princess, a waterfall that is sure to steal your heart.

At the peak of the wet season, Ravana Falls is a gushing torrent, an unstoppable herd of aquatic horses galloping towards their destination. A steady thread of tourists are sure to be seen making their way to the foot of Ravana once within the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary where it’s located. At first sight, the Ravana Falls can appear rather underwhelming, a rather ordinary cascade hemmed in by close packed trees. But we venture you to take a leap and hike past the first tier to the two beyond across 25m of slope and cliff face that the water traverses.

Forging your way through thick vines and ferns, the break past the tree line would provide not just welcome respite but a breathtaking view. The land before you folds into small mounds of ochre and green, Little Adam’s Peak visible even through the fine veil of mist. Here, the water flows past your skin like liquid crystals. It is in the top two tiers that all the beauty of Ravana is stowed away, safely beneath the cover of dense vegetation. With Ravana Falls, one must take the chance to find your own way forward to experience this natural wonder to its fullest.

Tips Before You Go
If a hike to the 2nd and 3rd tiers of Ravana Falls seems a little too risky for you, the Ravana Ella Caves is a separate adventure you can embark on. The path to the cave is clearly demarcated with a temple as the nearest landmark. It is in these caves where it is believed Ravana stowed his kidnapped princess away. These days, you might not find a damsel in distress within but a basin of water reflecting the crown of trees beyond the cave opening, waiting for you to dive in.
