Ras Muhammad National Park

An Egyptian national park overlooking the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba.

Ras Mohammad National Park is a national park situated south of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, which overlooks two gulfs - the Gulf of Suez to the west and the Gulf of Aqaba to the east. When the Sinai Peninsula came back to Egypt, the national park was designated as a protective zone from fishing and other anthropogenic activities due to the impact these activities have on the coral reef and marine ecology. The name of the park translates to ‘Muhammad’s Head’ where ‘head’ refers to ‘headland’ - legend has it that it is because the area looks like like a profile of a bearded man’s face. The national park is made up of two islands, Tiran and Sanafir, and while they are mostly similar in terms of environment, the walking trails and routes are vastly different. As a result of earthquakes, underwater caves have formed, reaching depths of over 14m. These can be explored if you so wish, provided you’re a competent swimmer and have the necessary equipment. After all, there are inherent dangers to exploring unknown underwater caves. But if being in the water isn’t your thing, then you’ll be pleased to know that the inland areas include a vast diversity of desert habitats and is a major player in avian conservation and migration, serving as a place for their rest and nourishment. So if you’re looking to enjoy the wonders of nature, and trudge through all sorts of different terrain, then this is the ideal place for you.
