Rancho Los Alamitos

Who needs TV when you can get all the excitement and drama you need here at the Rancho Los Alamitos, where you can learn about the twists and turns of California’s history.

The Ranchos of Los Alamitos has had a tumultuous past, a place of continuous change and evolution. From its not so humble beginnings as 300,000 acres of land used to farm the cottonwood plant, to the 7.5 acres of reserved land owned by the City of Long Beach, the ranch has come a long way. In between, it has belonged to the Governors José Figueroa and Yankee Don Abel Stearns, who took refuge in the land as a getaway from the rough and tumble of Los Angeles. Workers from all corners of the world had their hand in the renewal and reshaping of the ranch, and eventually it was urbanised from golden swaying fields of wheat by the oil industry. Most recently, and perhaps most famously, it was the property of the Bixby family, cherished as an enterprising ranch by the family and all who worked and lived on it.

The masses of money that the property accumulated over the years allowed Florence Bixby to transform the Ranchos into the lavish garden of today with her team of highly trained gardeners, fine craftsmen and revolutionary landscapers. Today it stands as a place of unparallelled historical significance, where one can come to appreciate the merit of innovation in every meaning of the word.

Tips Before You Go
The Rancho’s Christmas event is a blast from the past with decorations and performers clad in costumes portraying them as characters of the past to tell the story of the Ranchos. There are also educational programmes for children and adults alike held throughout the year where one can learn about agricultural and domestic skills, Native American, Japanese and Hispanic culture, and the history of landscaping. Take note that some of pathways in the garden can be uneven and narrow so proper footwear is important and bring your own refreshments if needed as there are no restaurants.
