Ramnefjellsfossen/Utigardsfossen

Make your trip to Norway more memorable with a visit to one of the world’s highest waterfalls, the Utigardsfossen.

Also known as the Ramnefjellsfossen (a mouthful for anyone!), this magnificent waterfall is listed as the eleventh tallest waterfall in the world, per The World Waterfall Database. Yet another waterfall in the Stryn municipality of the Sogn og Fjordane county, the falls are located on the Ramnefjellet mountain.

The Utigardsfossen is fed by the Ramnefjellbreen glacier, an arm of the mammoth Jostedalsbreen glacier. The water plunges down three free-leaping cascades, covering a cumulative distance of 818 metres before flowing into the Lovatnet at the base of the Utigardsfossen. You would be surprised however, that the Utigardsfossen is not as strong as its counterparts in the region. Indeed, its relatively small flow of water deems it unfit for hydroelectric usage.

The Utigardsfossen remains an attraction nonetheless, with its staggering height and its attractive location. Easily accessible via a boat ride on the Lovatnet or by road, there is even a designated campsite within hiking distance of the base of the falls for those who wish to spend more time soaking in the falls’ atmosphere!
