Ragunan Zoo

See a fascinating variety of animals.

The Ragunan Zoo is the world's third oldest zoo, and boasts such an impressive number of animals and plants, making it the second largest as well. With an aviary and a primate center among many other things, a day out with your family at the Ragunan Zoo will be a whale of fun (although there are no whales to be seen, sorry). The zoo was inaugurated in 1966, and today offers a chance to get a look at some of the world's most endangered animals up close.

Head to the Schmutzer Primate Centre, where primates like gorillas and orangutans reside in the 13-hectare area. Here’s an interesting fact: the thick, dark glass in the enclosure allows you to gaze at these amazing animals while making you invisible to them. Head on to the Reptiles area to gaze at humongous Komodo dragons basking out in the open, and turtles crawling about. You might spot a Java mouse-deer skittering about, or even Javan porcupines! There are even llamas and camels! Sumatran tigers prowl about in their enclosure, and the sun bear can be found near the lake. For you bird lovers, majestic swans share their space with pelicans, along with many other birds in the vicinity. Watch out for the cassowaries and the ostriches! Sink your feet through the wetlands and keep an eye out for crocodiles and the critically endangered gharials. A wild and educational ride awaits!
