Radhuset

The Town Hall of Helsingborg, which was deisgned by a fresh graduate!

It might surprise you to learn that the Radhuset, or Town Hall in the Swedish city of Helsingborg was designed not by a seasoned professional, but a fresh graduate. In the late 19th century, it was decided that Helsingborg would have a new town hall, and that its fate would be in the hands of the winner of an architectural competition. That winner turned out to be 26 year old fresh graduate from the Royal Academy in Stockholm, Alfred Hellerström, who later went on to design many other buildings, including the Handelsbanken house in Helsingborg, and the Lund University Library in Lund.

Thus, the Neo Gothic monument was born, standing at four floors tall, topped by a magnificent bell tower, like a cherry atop a sundae. Crafted with red tiles and granite, the Radhuset in Helsingborg truly embodies and old-style spirit that leaves you with a sense of wonder about how important decisions back then were made within these formidable walls.
