Queen Sofía National Museum and Art Center (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía)

This former hospital building turned national museum is home to some of the most famous 20th-century paintings.

Named after Queen Sofía (born 1938), the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Queen Sofía National Museum and Art Center) is Spain’s national museum of 20th-century contemporary art. Perceived as an extension to the Prado Museum, this museum houses works from the 19th century to the present time. However, older paintings from painters like Goya (1746 – 1828) have also emerged.

Art collections from painters like Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) and Salvador Dali (1904 – 1989) can be found here, with the Guernica painting by Picasso being the most famous. Besides Spanish painters, the works of foreign painters are showcased in this museum as well. These include Max Ernst (1891 – 1976), Francis Bacon (1561 – 1626) and Georges Braque (1882 – 1963). Furthermore, the museum devotes significant efforts to research and is home to an extensive library dedicated to art.
