Pushkin Museum

An outstanding art gallery in the heart of Russia.

Founded in 1912 and with over 700,000 pieces of artwork on display, the Pushkin Museum continues to astound visitors with its extensive collection that transcends time periods. Its architecture is based after an ancient Greek temple, and it houses some of the world’s most outstanding masterpieces, such as “La Gioconda” by Leonardo Da Vinci and “St. Sebastian” by Antonello da Messina. Step into the beautiful exhibition halls where rows of towering columns greet you, and warm sunlight shines through the glass ceiling, illuminating the exhibits. Take a step back in time as you as you admire displays of Egyptian mummies and weapons, as well as ancient Greek pottery.

If those fail to intrigue you, then why not examine masterpieces from the Renaissance and Middle Ages? The museum has plenty, and they are also better known to the general public as compared to ancient pottery. Aficionados of European art however might be better served visiting the “Museum of Private Collections”, which contains some of the most visually arresting paintings and sculptures by Russian and European artists. All in all, the Pushkin Museum is extremely comprehensive in its collection, and art lovers will truly fall in love with it.

Tips Before You Go
It is recommended to visit the museum as part of a guided tour, especially if you don’t speak Russian. The exhibits feature minimal English, and the audio guides only have English translations for a small number of the exhibits. You could visit the museum at any day of the week and it would make no difference, because the crowds here are minimal, and that means you get to be up close and personal with the gorgeous artwork.
