Elaborate steelwork patterned into intricate loops and curves mark the resplendent gates greeting visitors at the entrance of Powercourts estate. Built through the sweat dripping down the faces and forearms of over a 100 men put to work on the grounds over the course of more than 12 years, Powercourts’ existence itself is a feat to be celebrated. The estate is a perfect example of nature melding with the creative genius of the human mind. It is a sprawling complex of artificial vistas, bog land that was converted into a dainty oriental affair designed to display Japanese sensibilities, British rhododendrons which are a pest turned into an accessory. Two rearing marble white Pegasus guard the path to a deep navy blue lake dotted by drifting aquatic fauna. What was once the main mansion has since been converted into a commercial holding yet visitors can still lounge by the grey tiled patio. As the noonday sun hits, you could enjoy simple meal by the winding gravel lined walkways marked by Greek busts and water spouting cherubs. The cast iron sculptures bear the touches of Italian and French craftsmanship, mimicking the scenic greens of a nation a literal ocean away. Yet more works of art that haven’t been mentioned fill the picturesque estate. If mankind could build even a mirage of the Garden of Eden, this might just be it.
