Porta Nuova, Verona

The grand monumental gate to the romantic city of Verona.

Mention Verona and one will readily conjure up famous personalities in the play, Romeo and Juliet, by the great Shakespeare. Besides being known for this tragic love story, one must not skip paying a tribute to the grand monumental gate to the city. As the southern gateway to Verona, Porta Nuova or New Gate was an architectural masterpiece by the talented Michele Sanmicheli, built between 1533 and 1546. The Austrians then added sideways to the existing structure in 1854. As one passes by these gates, do take a moment to admire the magnificence of Porto Nuova which marks the beginning of the historical section of Verona. Look out for the impressive sculpture of Jupiter’s head and the majestic statue of the Lion of San Marco which has been guarding Verona ever since. Once past this gate, you will be greeted by the consequence of modernisation – a unique juxtaposition of a gate rich in history against an urban centre with newly built skyscrapers and trendy cafes all around. Nonetheless, this will be one unusual but memorable experience.
