Porta Leoni

Be awe-struck by the impressive gate of Verona, the Porta Leoni.

Steeped in history, the ancient Roman gate, Porta Leoni, is one of the oldest and most important gates in the romantic city of Verona (otherwise known as the city of Romeo and Juliet). Built during the Roman Republic, Porta Leoni was connected to the road, which led to Bologna and Aquileia. As you survey the facade of Porta Leoni, do look out for the square structures of the gate and the twin towers beside it. From the towers, visitors will be rewarded with a marvellous view of the Veronese countryside. Upon reaching the galleries on the upper levels of Porta Leoni, be overwhelmed by the ancient grandeur of the gate as you walk through its impressive 3.3 m high arches.

In addition, as you admire Porta Leoni along the streets, you would likely notice a gaping hole in the middle of the road with a fence around it. That is certainly not some building mishap, but in actual fact, an archaeological spot with a marble floor. This just further accentuates the historical significance of not just Porta Leoni, but also the surrounding buildings in this charming city as well.
