Ponte Vecchio

The beautiful bridge that is always featured in postcards from Florence.

The oldest bridge in Florence, the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) is a medieval bridge which dates back to the 14th century. Spanning the length of the River Arno in Florence, it was the only bridge in the city that survived World War II unscathed. What makes this bridge unique is that it houses shops selling mesmerizing arrays of jewelry, art, as well as souvenirs.

The bridge is always teeming with tourists and locals alike, and one can also enjoy live performances by musicians or get portraits done by the artists there. In fact, you'd be surprised to know that the bridge used to be occupied by tanners and butchers! Look out for the bronze bust of Benvenuto Cellini, a 16th-century goldsmith, which stands atop a pretty fountain. Come here at dusk to witness a stunning sunset, especially when seen from the Ponte Santa Trinità.

Tips Before You Go
While most of the shops here sell trinkets and jewellery, there are a few which sell gelato, and these are some of the best ones in the whole of Florence. Be sure to give them a try. Do keep a lookout for your belongings as well, as the bridge is a popular spot for pickpockets.
