Ponte Pietra

A beautiful bridge and a stunning monument.

The oldest bridge in Verona, the Ponte Pietra or ‘Stone Bridge’ in Italian, is also an important monument of the city. Completed in the year 100 B.C, this elegant Roman arch bridge spans the tranquil waters of the Adige River. Admire the visually stunning red brick and white stone (what was once all wood!) which form fabulous alternating bands on the body of the Ponte Pietra. Those with a keen eye will notice the marvellous amalgam of different architectural styles which reflects the various eras in which it was rebuilt – the Middle Ages, then in 1298 and subsequently in 1520 during the Venetian Domination. Best viewed from a distance, visitors can appreciate its splendour especially at sunset. The warm glow of the evening Sun cast against the picturesque buildings lining the Adige River is certainly something you do not want to miss!
