Ponte della Costituzione

A shiny steel bridge set amidst the stony buildings of Venice.

A controversial new addition to the Grand Canal, the Constitution Bridge is the fourth bridge to be built over Venice’s iconic waterway in 2008. The bridge connects the north side’s Piazzale Roma, where most tourists arrive, to the south side of the Grand Canal. The long, gently-arched span is paved in stone and frosted green glass, with transparent glass barriers on both sides, sharply contrasting the traditional architecture that surrounds it. This has drawn some displeasure from citizens. However, the bridge is a refreshing break from the classical shapes and veneers of Venice and is completed with a candy red capsule that helps the elderly and handicapped across. A contemporary link between the banks of Venice’s iconic scenery, the Ponte della Constituzione is a vision of tomorrow; so march forward and cross into the future!
