Plaka Castle

Here in the simple, quaint village of Plaka, journey back to the old Venetian times.

Amidst the blue-and-white sea of concrete in the village of Plaka is the only lasting evidence of Venetian influence on the island: the Castle of Plaka. Also known as Kastro Castle, it was built in the 13th century, after which the Venetians proceeded to erect houses around it for protection. The village, which slowly expanded to nearby areas when the population grew, exists to this very day and is situated on fertile grounds. Walking through the streets of this village will be a joyful experience as every nook and cranny is filled with whitewashed houses that mostly have blue linings.

To get to the peak of Kastro Hill, you will have to go up approximately 200 steps and once you are there, the view is splendid, even more so during sunset. Not only will you see the Aegean Sea spread out right before your eyes, but this spot also offers a view of the entire island, as well as that of the uninhabited island of Antimilos. Your trip to Naxos will be incomplete without a visit to this castle rich with history.
