Piazza Navona

Indulge in splendid fountains, Baroque Palazzos and mingle with street artists and hawkers all in a square.

One of the liveliest squares in Rome, the Piazza Navona, built in the 1st century AD, was once the site where the ancient Romans went to watch the agones (games). It is not surprising that the square somewhat resembles the open space of a stadium. Gape at the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, otherwise known as the Fountain of the Four Rivers - a grand masterpiece by Benini that depicts muscular personifications of the four rivers: Nile, Ganges, Danube and Plate, and is topped by the Obelisk of Domitian. Be amused by the Fontana del Moro which has a basin and four Tritons sculpted by Giacomo della Porta (1575). Or perhaps see the captivating battle between Neptune and a sea monster, surrounded by sea nymphs at the 19th-century Fontana del Nettuno. Regardless, all these are masterpieces which you should definitely take photos of.

Tips Before You Go
While the Piazza Navona is a sight to behold in the day, it is actually best seen at night when the lights are on and it becomes an illuminated masterpiece. The food and drinks sold here may be a little on the pricey side, so bring your own if you think that the prices aren\'t worth it, especially since you can get the same things for cheaper in other parts of Italy. Do watch out for the vendors near the fountains though, as they can be rather forceful when trying to get you to purchase their wares.
