Naples, Italy
Piazza Gesu Nuovo

Wander around in the historic centre of Naples, a UNSECO Heritage Site.

Taking its name after a church found nearby, The Church of Gesù Nuovo shares this name with the plaza. Sharing its name with a historic church, it must be tough sharing the limelight with a place like that. However, both the church and the piazza are unique in their own way, building a name for themselves.

Found in the piazza, is the Spire of the Immaculate Virgin. Built to invoke Virgin Mary’ protection from the plague, it is the tallest and the most ornamental plague column out of three in Naples. Aside from that, the guglia (obelisk) of the Immaculate is found here, right smack in the middle. A pyramid-like structure, it is ornately decorated with intricate marble figures. Every 8th of December, a crown of flowers is placed on top of the statue in honour of the Immaculate Conception. As you continue to wander around, you will no doubt be fascinated by the lives of locals, and the bustle of life in this busy square. With buskers belting out their favourite tunes, to locals chit-chatting about their day. The piazza is brimming with life, friendly locals ready to strike a conversation with you. You will definitely experience an authentic Neapolitan experience like no other.
