Piazza del Campidoglio

Another masterpiece by Michelangelo, not a sculpture or painting, but a square right in the heart of ancient Rome.

Nestled between the two peaks of the Capitoline Hill, the most important of Rome's fabled seven hills, lies the Piazza del Campidoglio (Capitol Square). One of Rome's most gorgeous squares, it was designed by Michelangelo in the 16th century. Appreciate his unique vision in which the square is in the shape of a trapezoid as well as the fascinating oval-shaped ground pattern. Marvel at his reconstruction of the Palazzo Senatorio, the seat of the Roman senate and the facade of the Palazzo dei Conservatori. Be captivated by the Cordonata, the magnificent staircase which leads from the bottom of the Capitoline Hill to the piazza; and be awe-inspired by the two authentic Egyptian lion statues made of basalt that flank the foot of the Cordonata.
