Palacio Paz

One of Buenos Aires’ grandest buildings, and that’s saying something.

In this city famed for its architecture and the opulence surrounding some of its richest, the Paz Palace is the perfect example of exquisite French Architecture in Buenos Aires. Architects and lovers of intricate work, this is your stop in Buenos Aires. Louis Marie Henry Sortais handled the design at the behest of Dr. José C. Paz, founder of the popular newspaper La Prensa, and ambassador to France in the late 19th century. The architect had studied at the prestigious École des Beaux Arts and won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1890.

With its 140 rooms, 40 bathrooms and massive 12,000 square meters, the residence was easily the largest at the time it was constructed. From the marble, chandeliers and furniture to the four-door iron gate, all items were imported from France. Marble walls, salons gilded in real gold and wood-tiled floors will greet you from the get-go, and lead you to the mosaic floors of the grand hall. Look up to gaze at the stained-glass dome and explore the seemingly endless rooms, replete with ornate decorations. Today, the former mansion serves as a social club for the Military Officers’ Association, with the Museum of Arms of the Nation found within the palace as well. Charge up your camera because you’ll be clicking away every second in this awe-inspiring palace!
