Palacio de Velázquez

Spanish architecture and modern art come together in harmony in this palace.

Palacio de Velazquez is an art gallery listed on Spain’s heritage register and located in the beautiful Retiro Park of Madrid. Upon the end of its construction in 1883, it graced the National Exhibition of Mining, Metallurgical Arts Ceramics, Glass and Mineral Waters. Today, it continues its long-standing tradition as a locus for art exhibitions organised by the classic Museo Reina Sofia and is part of the Google Art Project. The red-brick neo-classical building wields iron and glass as tools to illuminate the interior of the palace marvelously.

Designed by the same architect as the Palacio de Cristal, Ricardo Velázquez Bosco has also designed a number of significant buildings in Madrid. Artworks displayed within are often accentuated by the sunlight's dancing embellishments. Palacio de Velazquez is a must-visit for all culture vultures, who will get to witness the way the art exhibits and the historic architecture merge to produce a perfect euphony.
