The only university museum in the United States dedicated to Asian and Pacific Islander art and culture.
Designed in the style of Chinese Qing Dynasty palaces, the National Register of Historic Places lists the Pacific Asia Museum, built in 1926 in Pasadena, California. With over 15,000 pieces in their permanent collection, the artwork spans 5,000 years of history. The museum contains artwork of various styles, but has one of the largest Harari Collection of art from the Edo and Meiji period of Japanese history. The museum, which has become part of the University of South California since its inauguration in 1971, also contains collections of South Pacific barkcloth, Chinese ceramics and textiles, and Buddhist artwork from throughout Asia.
Outside near the courtyard is a beautiful Chinese-style garden with Taihu rocks, and culturally-significant plants like plum, bamboo and pine. There is also a koi pond with a bridge over it, making the garden a quiet and endearing place to spend time in.
