Ostafyevo State Museum “The Russian Parnassus”

A literary museum with a great history.

The Ostafyevo State Museum “The Russian Parnassus” is a literary and historical museum on the territory of the formerly noble Ostafyevo country estate. In 1792, Andrey Ivanovich Vyazemsky (1754–1807) bought the estate and in 1801, he started to build a new house there. Ostafyevo soon became one of the centres of Russian spiritual life. For more than 100 years, Ostafyevo belonged to the same family - four generations of the Vyazemsky princes. Today, the Ostafyevo is synonymous with famous writers throughout the 19th century. Well-known Russian historian Nikolay Karamzin (1766 – 1826) wrote his famous “History of the Russian State” at this building, staying for a total of 12 years. In the 1930s, the house was transformed into a health resort, where all the interiors were changed, and collections were distributed between different museums of USSR. In 1989, Ostafyevo Estate Museum was restored and reopened. For literature enthusiasts, traditional poetry festivals are held annually to mark poet Alexander Pushkin’s (1799 – 1837) birthday.
