Oslo Cathedral (Oslo Domkirke)

A splendid church that welcomes one and all.

Serving as the primary church for the Church of Norway Diocese of Oslo, and the venue for events such as weddings and funerals for Norway’s Royal Family and Government, the Oslo Cathedral is a church of great importance. While originally built in the 17th century, the interior of the church was renovated in accordance to the Baroque style in the 1950s. Majestic murals adorn the ceilings, while vibrant stained glass windows surround the cathedral. Although the cathedral is classified as a Lutheran church, visitors from all walks of life and beliefs are welcomed, as the church believes in tolerance and embracing your fellow man. Traditional, yet open minded. That is how this church operates. You could attend mass, or simply come for some peaceful contemplation at the beautiful Oslo Cathedral. Who knows, you might find yourself experiencing some sort of spiritual awakening.

Tips Before You Go
Book a guided tour in advance for a more enriching experience of the church. Visitors are also encouraged to light a candle and say a few prayers for loved ones, although this isn’t forced upon you. Taking pictures is also frowned upon, although hordes of tourists still do so anyway, much to the chagrin of the cathedral’s management. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide if you wish to follow in their footsteps.
