A collage of colors: blossoms of pink, yellow and purple cascading out of flower boxes and wooden balcony gardens. A walking rainbow: a cart of glazed pottery in either pastel or vivid hues towed along on a cart by a weathered shopkeeper in a wide brimmed hat against the sun. A palette of shades: thick coats dressing traditional adobe structures restored to what they had once been alongside replicas that had been added in later years. The Old Towns of San Diego were a celebration of vibrancy from the colors predominantly used to the music that could always be heard no matter which part of town you wandered to. All this you can see even today at the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, bringing back the mid-19th Century. Like two tubes of paint being mixed together, this town is representative of San Diego as it was being passed from the Mexicans to the Americans following the Mexican American War. It’s a zone of transition and exploration, with indistinct boundaries and blurred lines. This is where you have active blacksmiths alongside both woodworking zones and basket making workspaces.
