Old Castle

An old, stunning piece of architecture telling rich tales of German history from the Stone Age to the present day, through historical and archaeological artefacts.

True to its name, the Old Castle is truly old, dating back to the 10th century where it was used as a water castle to protect the stud garden. Thereafter, it was expanded after the counts of Wuerttemberg moved in, and is used today to house the Wuerttemberg State Museum. Despite undergoing many reconstructions, the exterior of the castle managed to retain its classic medieval character. On the inside, the inner court boasts of magnificent Renaissance style, showcasing an impressive work of architecture. The Wuerttemberg State Museum, opened in 1948, places an emphasis on the history of the state from the Stone Age up until to the present day. Its historic core can be traced back to the art chamber, founded by King Wilhelm I von Wuerttemberg, which was the result of the passion for collecting since the 16th century. Visitors will certainly enjoy a walk through history, through the appreciation of the many unique, rare and priceless collections on display.
