An imperial property in Kyoto city and the former estate of Okochi Denjiro.
Built as a residence for the late silent movie star Okochi Denjiro (1898 – 1962), Ōkouchi Sansō Villa is open for public viewing today. The admission fee includes a self-guided exploration of the former estate, as well as a nice Japanese sweet and a cup of hot matcha tea. The compound, which covers approximately 20,000 square metres, houses the villa, the garden, a teahouse, a study room, an open-air museum and a Shinto shrine, amongst others. The villa is a stunning example of traditional residential architecture in Japan, and is certainly a treat to the eyes. Visitors should not miss out on the beautiful garden which leads to a viewpoint that offers lovely views over the city of Kyoto. Although Ōkouchi Sansō Villa is an imperial property, no prior application procedure is required; simply visit and explore the historic house at your own pace!
