Once the summer residence of the Bavarian monarchs, the Baroque-style Nymphenburg Palace is one of the largest palaces in Europe and is a must-visit destination for visitors travelling to Munich. Built in 1664 and completed in 1675, the palace was expanded several times. While some of the rooms seen today still retain its Baroque decorations, others were redesigned in Rococo or Neoclassical style. Visitors should not miss out on the Gallery of Beauties, a collection of 36 female portraits gathered by Ludwig I of Bavaria (1786 – 1868), as well as the chamber where Ludwig II (1845 – 1886) was born. The equally popular Nymphenburg Palace Park offers a landscape of picturesque lakes, historic sculptures and other architectural gems. With its remarkable combination of architecture and garden design, Nymphenburg Palace is one of the best illustrations of a synthesis of the European arts.
