Notre Dame De Lourdes (Our Lady of Lourdes)

An impressive church amidst a bustling Muslim city, the Notre Dame De Lourdes reminds us of the importance of peaceful co-existence.

Casablanca is brimming with life, culture and interesting architecture. One of the city’s most striking points of interest is the Notre Dame De Lourdes, also known as Our Lady of Lourdes. Built between 1953 and 1956 in a completely European style, it is the church’s interior that gets visitors really excited. The moment you step foot inside, you will notice a red glow all around you. Don’t worry, it’s not your eyes playing tricks on you. It’s just that there are dramatic stained glass windows all around the walls of this church, with most of them being predominantly red in colour. When the sunlight pierces through them, it creates this strange effect that wouldn’t seem out of place on an Instagram filter. Regardless, it does imbue the church with a unique and sombre atmosphere, making it all the more spiritual. It is a wonder to see a church of such grandiose nature standing tall in the midst of a predominantly Muslim country. It reminds us that a peaceful co-existence is not only an ideal but is also a reality.

Tips Before You Go
The church is still in active use, so do dress conservatively out of respect for this place of worship if you plan to visit. While visitors are more than welcome to pray at the pews, you can even join them for Sunday service. Just be sure to ask ahead to confirm the time. You wouldn’t want to make a dramatic entrance in the midst of a sermon and accidentally embarrass yourself now would you?
