Lillehammer, Norway
Norwegian Olympic Museum

Home to the history of Norway’s summer and winter Olympic games.

The Norwegian Olympic Museum is situated at Maihaugen in Lillehammer, Norway. It showcases history of the Olympic Games ever since it originated in the ancient times.

With an emphasis on the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo and the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer (obviously so, since they were the hosts of the Games then!), the highlights of each game are displayed through interactive exhibits, presentations and stories with authentic artefacts. Apart from the permanent exhibit, there are also temporary exhibits with themes related to sport and sporting history. Paralympics and the Youth Olympic Games have their individual sections within the museum as well.

The museum was opened by King Harald V and Queen Sonja in 1994 and reopened again in 2016. It remains the only one of its kind in northern Europe that covers the entire history of the games. Today, it boasts a total of 7,000 Olympic items and this vast collection has attracted scores of visitors to its doors. Regardless of whether you’re a follower of the Games, the museum is certainly not to be missed as it offers visitors a glimpse into a long-standing tradition.
