Nitobe Memorial Garden

An authentic Japanese garden experience in Vancouver.

Experience a taste of Japan in Canada by paying a visit to the Nitobe Memorial Garden in Vancouver. Located within the University of British Columbia, not only is this one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in North America, but it is also considered one of the top five Japanese gardens in the world, excluding of course, Japan. When the then-Crown Prince (now Emperor) Akihito walked through the gardens, he said, “I am in Japan.” Truly, the exquisite garden, with its natural waterfalls and shrubs pruned in typical Japanese fashion, feels like a doorway to the land itself.

This tranquil garden, named in honor of Inazo Nitabe, prides itself on its careful placing of the flora, to display harmony in nature by balancing their positions. There is even a traditional tea house that conducts tea ceremonies as they are meant to be, including an outer roji tea garden, the main tea room and a preparation room. Don’t forget to take a look at the strategically placed lanterns, each with its own special meaning. As you traverse the gardens, be at peace and keep an eye out for the lovely reflecting pond, with bright and colourful Koi swimming in its depths.
