Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, Los Angeles

Japanese influences in architecture meets Buddhism in this serene place.

Located nearby Little Tokyo, as well as the Japanese American National Museum, this temple has much Japanese influences, fitting right in the little town dedicated to all thing Japanese.

As you enter the temple, you will be welcomed by a lovely, well-maintained garden. Crafted by Mr Nunokawa, a Japanese garden expert, he, alongside several members of the temple came together, lovingly piecing every piece of this garden together. Moving forth, step into the large main chapel (Kondo) where most activities are held, accommodating 500 people. As you continue exploring, look out for the eight-panel mural, a gift from Hideye Chiji. He painstakingly painted it with his son, taking over a year. This mural is one of its kind in the US, beautifully depicting the Shakyamuni Buddha. Not forgetting, the massive bell tower (Bonsho), kindly donated by another Japanese stands majestically in the temple’s compound. It is tolled only before special services. Brimming with Japanese culture at its finest, the temple is a must-visit.
