Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam

The church that has been the centre of life in Amsterdam for centuries.

Just beside the Royal Palace stands the impressive Nieuwe Kerk, one of the most important churches in Amsterdam. It was completed in the early 1400s and has since become not just a place of worship, but also the centre of society and politics. The Royal Family has been inaugurated here since the 1800s, and in 2002 the church also served as the venue for the wedding of Prince Willem-Alexander and Maxima Zorreguieta.

The interior of the Nieuwe Kerk is just as stunning as its stately, Gothic exterior. A wealth of stunning, opulent craftsmanship greets you as you step inside. The imposing pipe organs are gilded with gold, the brass choir screen is an enchanting sea of glittering patterns, and the monuments to Amsterdam’s naval heroes are nothing short of breath-taking. Light filters in through the resplendent stained-glass windows, depicting important scenes and characters in Christianity. Don’t forget to look down as well – under your feet are hundreds of grave slabs, many of which feature delicate, masterful carvings that are as beautiful as the stained glass.
