Nietzsche-Haus

Nietzsche’s favourite summer home, and a museum celebrating his life and works.

Philosophy enthusiasts will adore the Nietzsche-Haus, a 200-year-old house frequented by the famous philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. He spent his summers in the house from 1881 to 1888, and wrote many famous works here including “Thus Spoke Zarathustra”. Once a privately-owned estate which offered rooms for rent, the quaint cottage, still containing its 18th century furnishings, is now a homage to Nietzsche and an attraction for artists, writers and scholars from around the world.

One of the house’s highlights is Nietzsche’s room, the exact room where Nietzsche stayed during his summer visits. It looks just as it did when he was still renting it, and seems as if Nietzsche would walk through the door any second. You should also pop by the research library, which contains a collection of books related to Nietzsche and his works, and sit in the armchair which Nietzsche used in his Basel home. If you’d like to know more about Nietzsche, then head to the first exhibit room, where you can learn about his life and career from its collection of documents, photographs and other paraphernalia.
