An art museum in Munich, Germany specialising in European art.
The Neue Pinakothek is a famed art museum situated in Munich, Germany. It specialises in European art tracing back to the 18th and 19th century and is considerably one of the most significant museums of art belonging to the 19th century worldwide. Along with the Late Pinakothek and the Pinakothek Der Moderne, they form Munich’s art area, also known as Kunstareal.
The building was originally founded by former King Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1853 but was destroyed during WWII. The new building was then conceptualised by architect Alexander Freiherr von Branch and today encompasses modern features like bay windows, stairways and keystones. The building was re-opened in 1981 and today houses a wide collection of over 3000 European paintings and sculptures. Focusing on 19th century German art, pieces from King Ludwig I’s private collection are showcased here, alongside pieces from Monet, Van Gogh and Hans von Marées.
