Nea Kameni

Ready to explore the youngest volcanic landform in the Eastern Mediterranean?

As the boat docks in the turquoise waters of Nea Kameni’s cove (New Burnt), take a look behind you to see Santorini stretched out on the prominent caldera cliff. When you clamber off, you might notice that the ground on this uninhabited island is dotted with reddish grassy succulents, especially if you’re visiting in the summertime. Nea Kameni has been dormant for almost seven decades and has erupted eight times over the past two millennia. It's not every day you get to see a dormant volcano - especially one that still has many active sulfur vents.

Set off on your hike to the volcanic crater and marvel at the contrast of the jet-black lava rock against the soft blue sky. Pull your caps over your eyes and brave the blazing heat to the top, a 130-meter climb if you're up for it. Traverse the rim of the crater and keep an eye out for the striking yellow of sulfur deposits emerging from the fumaroles. You'll definitely have a better perspective of Santorini from here, which looks even more imposing, with its pristine white buildings sprinkled along the caldera top like icing sugar. There are even a few cairns here, stacked in fascinating shapes and small growths of bright yellow flowers - proof that the barren landscape isn't as devoid of life as it seems (well, apart from the scores of visitors). So, what are you waiting for?
