One of the most important maritime museum in Europe, the Museu de Marinha (Navy Museum) is devoted to Portugal’s proud naval history. With an impressive collection of 18,000 items such as models of ships, navigation instruments and maps, this museum is replete with attractive features for you to explore.


A must-see is the oldest exhibit – a wooden sculpture of Raphael, the archangel, which kept Vasco da Gama company on his voyage to India. Other highlights include the wonderful terrestrial globe made by Willem Jansz Blaeu in 1645, the royal cabin from Queen Amelia’s yacht from the 19th century, rare porcelains from the Far East and even a 15th century Japanese armour.
