Naval Museum of Madrid (Museo Naval)

Interesting Spanish maritime artifacts await you at the Naval Museum of Madrid.

Just a block away from Plaza de la Cibeles is the Museo Naval de Madrid (Naval Museum of Madrid), a national museum where visitors can learn more about the Spanish Armada. This museum showcases a rich collection of historical items from the Spanish Navy, including ship models from the earlier days of Spain's maritime history to the 20th century. Perhaps its most prized possession is the Mappa Mundi, drawn by Spanish navigator Juan de la Cosa (1450 – 1510), which shows the pinpoint accuracy of Europe and Africa, as well as being the first known map to show the American continent. There are also naval charts, flags, weapons, uniforms and other naval paraphernalia in this museum. Another fascinating exhibit would be the submarine invented by Spanish scientist and sailor Isaac Peral (1851 – 1895), which is considered to be the world's first U-boat!
